Ploumen: give civil society organisations greater freedom
Development organisations and the government need to do more to demarcate their roles. On Thursday Lilianne Ploumen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, discussed this with civil society organisations meeting in The Hague in the framework of the annual ambassadors’ conference.
Ms Ploumen intends to continue to support civil society organisations. ‘Transparent, representative and innovative NGOs play a vital role.’ In the coming months Ms Ploumen will be meeting with development organisations to discuss future cooperation and an appropriate financial model. Ms Ploumen believes we should move towards more strategic cooperation and freedom for NGOs. ‘Civil society organisations help implement my policy, but are not dependent implementers of it,’ she added.
Other themes were also addressed on the final day of the ambassadors’ conference. Enhancing the economic and cultural image of our country featured in a number of thematic discussions. At the session on the Netherlands as a cultural hotspot there was clearly a great deal of enthusiasm for the preview of the many events being organised in the Netherlands and abroad this year.
